Parks and Recreation

This is how I spent my Thursday night, and oh gosh, it is easily one of my favorite shows. I had never really watched it before this summer when Travis and I watched the first 3 seasons on Netflix. I must admit, I had seen an episode sometime a year or so ago, and it was okay. But let me tell you, watching it from the beginning changed my opinion. It is wonderful!
I recommend it to anyone who loves a good laugh. It is similar to The Office, but a little less awkward and a little more laugh out loud funny. But definitely watch it from the beginning if at all possible. You will quickly get to know and love these characters.
So head on over to NBC at 7:30 (yes, you can still watch Grey's) on Thursdays.

Teaching = Math?

For anyone who knows me, the idea that I am more qualified to teach math than English is probably shocking. Even though I somehow scraped by with A's in high school math, it is probably due to daily sessions in homeroom where Caley tried to teach me how to get the answers to my calculus homework.
You see, I did what I think a lot of students do: I memorized. IE: the second number goes here, square the third number, etc. What I probably should have done was to actually learn the concepts. However I still hold some of the blame over my Algebra 1 teacher, who obviously didn't know the concepts himself, so my foundation was somewhat skewed.
English was a different story. I think I came out of the womb knowing the proper use of a gerund. My family always encouraged me to speak correctly, and I must say it made me somewhat of a perfectionist.
I saw a Victoria's Secret commercial the other day that used "there is" instead of "there are" when the predicate was plural. HELLO!

Serioiusly, check it out:
VS Commercial

Travis tells me to chill out and that most people don't notice things like that. Well I would love to be the person they paid to notice. I would take the advertising industry by storm. Don't even get me started on the KFC commercial.
But, I digress. I understand that many times it reaches more people to write the way something is commonly spoken than to make it grammatically correct. I even do that on this blog some.

The fact is, despite my natural talents and glaring deficiencies, I am going to be a math teacher. As a graduate in finance, I have enough math background to qualify, and I passed my Praxis II Mathematical Content exam with flying colors (how, I still do not know). Technically the only English classes I've had are Comp 1 and 2, which hardly qualifies me to teach anything in that area. Luckily, there are more available math positions these days than English. No one wants to teach math, and I can definitely see why.
I am hoping that after my first year in math (which is what I must teach to earn my Masters) I will be able to move to another subject... English?... Business? But until then I will stay up-to-date on my functions and derivatives.

So maybe this time next year I'll be updating you about how the 1st 6-weeks of Algebra 2 is going. If it's calculus, trust me, I won't have time to blog.

Blessings

I love this song. And oh how true it is.

Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare.
Psalm 40:5

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18

Prayer

The hardest part of my day is biting my tongue, but I'm getting better at it.
Today during class I took my frustrations out on paper and wrote a constructive thought I am saving for the semester's teacher review form.

Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him. Proverbs 29:20

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. James 1:19

Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few. Ecclesiastes 5:2

best wishes

Friday night, Travis and I were lounging on the couch watching Office Space wrapped in my snuggie (I know, we get crazy on the weekends) when I got a very odd text from my mom. She said that Lara Beth's (my roommate and friend) mom posted something on facebook. Before I had time to look, I heard a car door slam. I opened the door and there was Lara Beth, and she was ENGAGED!!
I can't believe my mom found out before I did, but that didn't spoil the surprise at all. I had been expecting Blake to pop the question soon, but I was still shocked. I am so happy for the two of them. I am also proud of Blake for asking soon enough to give LB enough time to plan, which I'm sure will be more time consuming than her current class schedule!
   Here's to the happy couple!!

I know they will be very very happy. Especially since they've been dating 5 years and are still going strong. They must like each other:)  I look forward to helping her plan when my opinion is needed, and showing up on the Big Day for lots of fun. I still can't believe we are old enough for this, and she is younger than I am!
Lara Beth, I love you and am so happy for you. I wish you all the best on your big day, and every day after that. Thank you for letting me share in your joy.
    YAYYYY!!

May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.  A loving doe, a graceful deer-- may she satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love. Proverbs 5:18-19

It's Friday, and I'll be staring at the clock on my desk for a few hours. Noon can't get here fast enough.
While I wait I will attempt to do a little research for class, but will probably end up texting random things I find online to Travis.
I know, I lead an exciting life. Be jealous.

Do not conform.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. ~ Romans 12:2

So long sweet summer...

Today is the very last day of Summer.

It's one of the saddest days of the year as far as I am concerned. This morning when my alarm went off at 6am, I could barely see the sky beginning to welcome that morning tinge of blue. Not so long ago, the sun rose before I did. Not today. Fall is on its way.

Don't get me wrong, I love fall. The mild, breezy days are nice, and even have a fresh, crisp smell that is wonderful. But somehow I am never ready to bid farewell to the bright colors and warm nights of summer; when the sun is high all day and crickets chirp all through the night.

So I write this post as a tribute to seasons, old and new. It is time to trade in our bikinis and flip flops for cozy scarves and boots. And as sad as the day may be, good riddance to humid Mississippi air, and halelujah for football season. May the transition be lovely.

Happy Fall everyone!

And as long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease. Genesis 8:22

Monday

Today is just that kind of day. Maybe because I'm tired and have tons of schoolwork to do before tomorrow. Maybe because I have to work on Thursday before the LSU game. or maybe it's just because it's Monday.

I have a feeling work and school will be a looonngg seven hours today.

These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world. John 16:33

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah. Psalm 46:1-3,7

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ Isaiah 41:10

Bored with you...

This describes Travis and I pretty well. No matter what we're doing, even if it is no fun or boring, we have a good time. Lately we've been picking out terrible movies to stream on Netflix. As bad as they are, we always manage to have fun watching them. All you need is some cookies and milk or an assortment of margaritas to make it a fun (and free) night. Afterall, when you're with someone you love, it doesn't matter what you're doing!
Here are a few of the awful.. and I mean awful... movies we've watched lately.

But if you've got your favorite person in the world by your side (and a comfy couch)I recommend all of them!

Hump Day

Here it is, Wednesday- Hump Day! and I'm majorly bored at work. Seriously, I finished all my work at 9am and have NOTHING to do. I mean, I could do my homework but I suppose that would require me to bring it with me, huh. Oh well. To pinterest it is!

On a happier note, today is one of my BEST friend's birthday!! Rae will be 23 today. We are officially OLD. I'm taking her to lunch at Restaurant Tyler and right now I am drooling over the thought of that fried porkchop. It will make the morning even longer I'm sure.

Here's a picture of the night we became friends. We knew each other, from high school even, but this night- freshman year in the Sigma Chi new wing bathroom- we truely bonded.

Seems like it's been forever. But I'm glad to say that we survived that year, and here we are 4 years later and I wouldn't change a minute of it. HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAE-ANNE!!
